As a stay-at-home mom who spends her days changing diapers, napping whenever possible, and regularly speaking in high-pitched, sing-songy baby talk, I sometimes think I can actually feel individual brain cells shrivel up and die. I’ll take intellectual stimulation wherever I can get it, including from this blog, my virtual time-out chair.

What happens when you’re engrossed in a good book? Do the dishes and laundry pile up, neglected until that final page is turned? Do your kids catch up on every On Demand episode of Spongebob, Dora, and Sesame Street while you catch up on an engaging story line and endearing characters? Do you stay up into the wee hours, unable to stop reading?

I admit it. I’ve been known to commit a few of these neglectful acts, all for the sake of a good book. However, it doesn’t just stop there. No, it’s time to come clean and confess to you the full extent of my reading obsession.

I read in the car. Yes, I said it. I’m a terrible person. Before you frantically click the ‘unlike’ button on my Facebook page, allow me to explain. I do not actually read while driving. However, if thoroughly engaged in a good read, I do bring the book along with me wherever I go. I read while sitting in the carpool line at the school. I read while waiting for the gas tank to fill up. I suppose I have even read while stopped at a red light. Okay, so perhaps I understand if you do decide to ‘unlike’ me after all.

But wait! That’s not all! I do actually have some good reading habits as well. In fact, a sure sign that I’m in the midst of a good read? I go to the gym. Yep. I tire of holding the book in one hand and waving a toy in the other, trying to entertain both the tot and my mind simultaneously. So, I pack up her diaper bag, strap her into the car seat, and drive to the gym. There, I can leave her in the childcare center for a mere $2.50 while I go exercise my mind and my body. I’ll read while on the exercise bike, the treadmill, the elliptical. The better the book, the longer the workout. In fact, perhaps it’s time for a bit of goal setting? Less reading in the car, more reading at the gym!

Now that I think about it, perhaps this explains my pattern of yo-yo weight loss: too many mediocre books.

Currently, I’m reading Children of God by Mary Doria Russell. This book has been on many car rides with me and has me spending a great deal of time at the gym. I haven’t read science fiction in years and I’ve forgotten how much I enjoy it! Do you read scifi? If so, what’s your favorite scifi book?

  1. Oh I won’t unlike you for loving books!! I used to carry a book around everywhere too. Now, I reserve an hour before bedtime to read. It’s my hour, and I love it.

    • Me too, although sometimes I stay up way too late and am trying to read when I can barely keep my eyes open. Then, in the morning, I can’t remember what I read!

  2. I would never unlike you for reading, ma lady! I LOVE to read. I don’t carry physical books anymore, although I do prefer them over electronic ones. I bought Tina Fey’s book BossyPants for Kindle and am reading it now on the iPad. It’s hilarious! When I’m home I read real books. For some reason I can’t read on iPad at home. I only use it on the go like at work and whatnot. I haven’t read much scifi though, unless you call A Wrinkle In Time scifi. LOL

    • I keep contemplating whether or not to get a Kindle, but I really love my books! We’ve turned our formal living area into a library with lots of bookshelves and comfy seating, and it’s wonderful. Even if I read something on a Kindle, I think I would be tempted to buy the actual book anyway just to keep it in the library. And yes, A Wrinkle In Time definitely counts and is a wonderful book!

  3. I absolutely love to read! I just wish I had more time for it. I read in the car too, but it’s usually my twitter stream instead of a book. ;)

  4. I do the EXACT same thing!! I always carry my book with me, because how on earth would we ever get any reading done? Except, never read while running on the treadmill…that’s just plain dangerous ;)

  5. When I really get into a book I will stay up all night to finish it. I always pay for it the next day but it’s so difficult not to put down.
