As a stay-at-home mom who spends her days changing diapers, napping whenever possible, and regularly speaking in high-pitched, sing-songy baby talk, I sometimes think I can actually feel individual brain cells shrivel up and die. I’ll take intellectual stimulation wherever I can get it, including from this blog, my virtual time-out chair.

Okay people, let’s talk a little bit about home decor.  During our house hunt, we have so far viewed well over 30 properties.  Decorating styles have run the gamut from grandma’s plastic-covered couch and hand made doilies, to garage-sale smorgasbord, to Martha Stewart inspired elegance.  However, there is one decorative element that seems to cross all boundaries, show up in house after house, and it never fails to appall me:  stencils.  The kitchen wall stencilled with leafy vines and perfect little purple grapes.  The tile backsplash stencilled relentlessly with pineapples. And most shockingly, the beautiful hard wood floors marred by cute little red flowers.  So please, the next time you find yourself reaching for the paintbrush and a stencil shaped like a pine cone, do yourself a favor and consider the resale value of your home.  Then, just back away from the stencils!

Then again, I am the one who decided to paint my dining room wall red, hang up a huge tapestry from Africa, and stick a 6 foot tall wooden giraffe in the corner.  To each his own…
